From 2 June 2025, we invite you to make use of the Kiez-Box at Markthalle Neun. The Kiez-Box is a publicly accessible fridge where rescued food is shared – free of charge, hassle-free and for everyone. A project to combat food waste and promote greater appreciation for produce.

After all, far too much good food still ends up in the bin. The Kiez-Box is part of a Berlin-wide campaign run by the Senate Department for Justice and Consumer Protection and the Verbraucherzentrale Berlin (Consumer Advice Centre). It aims to show just how easy it can be to save food in everyday life.

How does the Kiez-Box work?

Anyone who’d like to is welcome to take food from the box from Monday to Thursday between 10 am and 5 pm – no registration required. If you find something you like, you’re welcome to take it. If the box is empty, it means everything was snapped up quickly – and that’s a good sign.

The donated food comes exclusively from trained and verified ‘Foodsavers’ from the foodsharing initiative. They collect surplus food from businesses, check its quality and fill the boxes. Private donations are not permitted – safety and hygiene are ensured.

At the opening of the Kiez-Box at Markthalle Neun, Berlin’s Senator for Consumer Protection, Dr Felor Badenberg, said: “I am delighted that the Kiez-Box marks the implementation of yet another initiative from the Round Table on Food Waste in Berlin. This further enriches the partnership we aim to build through the Round Table, which I initiated. We are taking a highly pragmatic approach, working together with the retail sector, food banks and the food-sharing movement. Reducing food waste is a matter close to my heart. I would like to take this opportunity to thank not only our partners but also the Verbraucherzentrale (Berlin Consumer Advice Centre), which is supporting us with its expertise in setting up the Kiez-Boxes.”
