On 23 May 2006, the first ‘Lange Tafel’ event took place on Bergmannstraße, bringing together around 500 local residents at a single table. Since 2017, in collaboration with the Kulturverein Markthalle Neun e.V., one ‘Lange Tafel’ event a year has also been held in the historic Markthalle Neun, to which the whole neighbourhood is invited for a big spaghetti dinner. This event is always accompanied by a prior project week for primary school children from Kreuzberg as well as multiple theatrical performances by artists during the dinner.

On 23 May 2026, the Basic Law of Germany will celebrate its 77th anniversary, and on the same day, the Lange Tafel will mark its 20th anniversary. The initiator Isabella Mamatis has proclaimed the ‘Day of the Long Table’ to mark the 20th anniversary. From 2026 onwards, this day is set to become a key event in the ‘European Weeks’ calendar and will open the 2026 ‘Long Table Festival’. The initiative embodies the values of the European community – a cosmopolitan Europe characterised by human dignity, freedom, democracy and equality.

In November 2026, it will be that time of year again, and the Lange Tafel will return to Markthalle Neun. As part of the event, we will be running a workshop on nutrition and harassment for primary school children in Kreuzberg.
