Markthalle Neun: A Green Classroom

Together with the Vernetzungsstelle Kita- und Schulverpflegung Berlin e. V., the FÖL (Fördergemeinschaft Ökologischer Landbau Berlin) – as the ‘bio4school’ team – is bringing sustainable, regional food to life for pupils and teachers as part of the educational project ‘Wissen was schmeckt! Delicious organic food from the city and the region – regional value creation for Berlin, the organic city’.

Through free excursions, student-run companies visit regional organic farms along the value chain. In addition to theoretical input on the topic of organic regional production, they also gain a wealth of practical knowledge about processing. The programme is complemented by direct insights into various professions within the food industry and the agricultural sector.

One such excursion destination is Markthalle Neun, which, thanks to its combination of various elements of the value chain, is ideally suited as an out-of-school learning space. In collaboration with the Kochschule Neun, two events for student-run companies and one teacher training session have already taken place, during which participants harvested regional vegetables, cooked with seasonal produce and visited various food-related businesses.

Anyone who’s interested in finding out more about this topic is welcome to take a look at the ‘Wissen was schmeckt’ website, which is aimed at both pupils and teachers.
